Feeding the 5000, Nottingham

There really is such a thing as a free lunch!

“Feeding the 5000 is a campaign that aims to empower and inspire the global community to enact positive solutions to the global issue of food waste. Feeding the 5000 is also the name of the campaign’s flagship event where 5000 members of the public are given a delicious free lunch using only ingredients that otherwise would have been wasted.”

I was invited to shoot the most recent Feeding the 5000 event, held in Nottingham in October 2014, as part of my photography work with the Sustainable Food Trust.

The chef was up at 2am to start preparation of the vegan curry that was to be ready for midday. Two huge vats absorbed all manner of ingredients including carrots, cabbage, chick peas, potatoes, lentils, pasta and coconut milk. An army of workers also kneaded, rolled and cooked flat-breads through the  morning and into the afternoon.

By midday all was set for the first meals to be given away and a slow, steady trickle of people trooped past the army of volunteers serving the delicious offering. Facts on food waste were shared, petitions were signed, good food was put to good use, and much fun was had by all.

It is scandalous that so much edible food goes to waste every day, and what a fantastic way to highlight the issue to the general public.
